Iran isn’t yet an existential threat to Israel, but if Iran had nukes that would likely change. That said, Iran has played an important role in the fight against ISIS, so it is important for the US to ensure Iran does not build nukes but stays in the fight against ISIS.

For as long as Sunni Pakistan continues to hold an arsenal of nuclear weapons, Iran will not quit in their quest to acquire them.

According to the director of the Mossad, Tamir Pardo, the answer is “no”.

“What is the significance of the term existential threat?” the ambassadors quoted Pardo as asking. “Does Iran pose a threat to Israel? Absolutely. But if one said a nuclear bomb in Iranian hands was an existential threat, that would mean that we would have to close up shop and go home. That’s not the situation. The term existential threat is used too freely.” […]

According to Pardo, the “biggest threat to Israel’s security is the conflict with the Palestinians and not Iran’s nuclear program.” He’s not the only one who feels that way (The Forward, July 2014) .

That said, I’m not sufficiently knowledgeable about the situation to say one way or the other with any great conviction, but the “existential threat” claims do seem a bit over the top to me. Surely, Iran is aware that launching a nuclear attack on Israel would result in a response from other parties that would pose an existential threat to the IRI itself.

To some people it doesn’t matter if Iran is an existential threat or not. It is played up as an existential threat because it allows them to manipulate the behaviour of others.

Ya know, the standard only with Iranians instead of Jews or Commies.
